Spicy Apple Butter {In a Crockpot}

October 2014 026I was lucky enough to be gifted about 7 pounds of apples (thanks Janna & Pam!!!) and after tasting Pam’s wonderful apple butter, I decided to give it a go myself in the crockpot.  After all, apple butter and canning are both on my list of things to try my hand at.  So, it was perfect timing.

I found this apple butter recipe online, along with a great canning tutorial.  And honestly, the smell of apple butter is amazing, but when you combine that smell with freshly baked chewy oatmeal raisin cookies it is so good it should be a candle scent.

Spicy Apple Butter Adapted from southernplate.com

6 pounds granny smith apples (I used McIntosh), peel, cored, and sliced

4 cups sugar

2 slightly heaping teaspoons cinnamon

1 slightly heaping teaspoon cloves

1 slightly heaping teaspoon allspice

pinch of salt

1/4 cup water

Stir all the ingredients in a crockpot and put the lid on for 4 hours (high heat).  Take the lid off and stir after about 3 hours.  Then, using an immersion blender, puree the cooked apples.  Continue to cook the apples with the lid off until it’s a thick, dark, spreadable consistency.
